CleanShot X Alternatives for Mac, Compared Honestly

Updated November 2, 2026

CleanShot X is one of the most complete screenshot apps on the Mac, and plenty of people are happy paying for it. But it isn't the right fit for everyone. Maybe you want fewer features and a simpler toolbar, maybe you don't need cloud sharing, or maybe you just want to compare before you buy.

This guide covers what CleanShot X does well, where the alternatives differ, and how to pick. All competitor prices were checked on each company's official site on November 2, 2026. Prices change, so check again before you buy.

What CleanShot X does well

It's worth being clear about what you'd be giving up. According to cleanshot.com, CleanShot X includes:

Pricing: CleanShot Basic is $35 one-time with one year of updates (optional renewal at $19/year) and 1 GB of cloud storage. CleanShot Pro is $10 per user per month, billed annually, mainly for unlimited cloud and team features. It's Mac only and requires macOS 13 or later. There's no free trial on the official site, but there is a 30-day money-back guarantee.

If you rely on cloud links, webcam recording, keystroke overlays or polished backgrounds, CleanShot X is hard to beat.

KoalaShot: a lighter, buy-once option

KoalaShot is our app, so weigh this section accordingly. It's built for people who want the most-used CleanShot-style features without a learning curve:

Where CleanShot X is ahead: KoalaShot has no cloud sharing, webcam overlay, keystroke display, background beautifier or horizontal scrolling capture, and its OCR covers fewer languages. If you need those, CleanShot X is the better choice.

Pricing: a 7-day free trial, then a one-time purchase ($4.99) with no subscription. A license works on up to 3 Macs, and you can request a refund within 14 days. Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple silicon or Intel.

Shottr: tiny, fast, and free to start

Shottr is a small, fast screenshot tool aimed at designers and developers. It offers scrolling screenshots, OCR (including QR codes), annotation, pixel measurement tools and backgrounds. You can use it for free indefinitely; after 30 days it periodically asks you to upgrade. The Basic license is $12 one-time (required for commercial use), and a $30 "Friends Club" tier exists for supporters. Screen recording isn't listed among its features, so pair it with another recorder if you need video.

Best for: precise, pixel-level screenshots on a budget.

Snipaste: free pinning and annotation

Snipaste is popular for its snip-then-pin workflow: auto-detected UI elements, pinned floating screenshots you can zoom and make click-through, and annotation tools including mosaic and blur. It's free for personal use; Snipaste 2 Pro costs $8.99 for one device or $19.99 for three, and business use of version 2 needs a license. The official site doesn't mention scrolling capture or screen recording.

Best for: pinning reference images while you work, across Windows, Mac and Linux.

Snagit: documentation and training content

Snagit from TechSmith is aimed at people making guides and training material. It captures full scrolling pages, records the screen with microphone, system audio and webcam, and has rich markup tools. It runs on Windows and macOS 14+ and costs $39 per user per year as a subscription, with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Best for: teams that produce documentation on both Windows and Mac.

The free option: macOS's own tools

Before buying anything, know what's already on your Mac. ⇧⌘3 captures the screen, ⇧⌘4 an area, ⇧⌘4 then Space a window, and ⇧⌘5 opens the Screenshot toolbar for screenshots and recordings (Apple Support). Add Control to copy to the clipboard instead of saving to the desktop. What it doesn't do: scrolling screenshots, OCR inside the capture tool, pinning, or recording system audio. See our guides on scrolling screenshots and recording with internal audio.
